School Alumna Organizes Exhibition of Work by Emeritus Sculpture Professor

School of Art alumna Rebecca Brantley curated an exhibition that features the work by the former head of the sculpture Area Jim Buonaccorsi, among others. The exhibition, Gloria Victis: Three Artists Respond to War, is on view now through September 15, 2017 at the Piedmont College Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art in Demorest, Georgia. It includes work by painter Temme Barkin-Leeds of Atlanta, Georgia, and ceramic artist Richard Notkin of Vaughn, Washington, in addition to work by Buonaccorsi.

The School of Art has hired two new faculty to begin the 2017–18 academic year as assistant professors on the tenure-track in the areas of Art Education and Studio Art Core/Foundation. Christina Hanawalt is one our new faculty, with teaching and research efforts focused in art education.

Art History major Catherine Huff presented her research on “Desires for Difference: Tastes and Collecting of Later Nineteenth-Century American Paintings” during the 2017 CURO Symposium, held at the Classic Center on Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4. Her project focused on the evolution of taste in 19th c. American painting through formal analysis and original research into provenance, market history, exhibition history, and critical reception.

Flagpole Magazine’s Art Notes column highlights the painting practices of incoming MFA student Christina Foard and alumna Erin McIntosh as well as local artist Paul Collins in a recent article. The three artists are featured in Gallery@HotelIndigo’s Spotlight 2017 exhibition, which offers a focused glimpse into bodies of work by the three artists and is on view through September.

Art Education Graduate Student Sahar Aghasafari was awarded funding to attend a fibers workshop at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts this past July. Aghasafari, who received her Master of Art Education from the University of Arizona after earning a Master in Art Research and a BFA in Fabrics Design from the University of Tehran, is pursuing her PhD in Art Education at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN is an internationally recognized visual art education center.

Demitra Thomloudis, Assistant Professor of Jewelry & Metalwork, has work on view in two current exhibitions. CrossPASS, an exhibition with Motoko Furuhashi, is on view at the Baltimore Jewelry Center in Baltimore, MD until September 1, 2017. At the same time, the online group exhibition Body of Work: Contemporary Art Jewelry on the Body, organized through the Baltimore Jewelry Center, is available through Google Arts and Culture.

Director of the Dodd Galleries, Katie Geha, organized an exhibition opening this Friday at Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta. The exhibition, Ancient Art Object, features Dodd painting alumnus Jaime Bull and Kaleena Stasiak, a current graduate student in Printmaking and Book Arts. Other artists in the exhibition include: Karen Lederer, Rosemary Mayer, Padma Rajendran, Ry Rocklen, Siebren Versteeg, Max Warsh and Jeff Williams.

Assistant Professor of Jewelry and Metalwork Demitra Thomloudis has work featured in this year’s annual Penland Benefit Auction. Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in North Carolina's Blue Ridge mountains, Penland offers workshops, artist residencies, a gallery, and community collaboration programs.
