How to Request an Override or Directed Study

Requesting an override into a class or wanting to take a directed study?

Instructors should utilize the online request form.

When contacting an instructor to request access into a class, provide them with:

  • the course number
  • the course CRN
  • your 811# and UGA email address, and
  • a link to the form

If there is not an instructor listed for the course, contact the Area Chair.

ONLY THE INSTRUCTOR OF A COURSE CAN SUBMIT THIS FORM. If a form is submitted by a student it WILL NOT be processed.

PLEASE NOTE that sending the form to an instructor DOES NOT register you for class. You will need to complete the registration process in ATHENA once you have been notified that the form has been processed.

Time conflict override needed? Email the Sectioning Office directly for instructions.

Help! I'm having trouble registering for my classes!

Below are answers to commonly asked registration questions. If the answer to your question is not below, please contact the Scheduling Office.

  • There is a hold on my account.
  • How do I register for a waitlist?
  • I need to change my internship credit hours (or variable credit hour course).
  • How do I see if a class is for Art majors only?
  • Registration Add Error messages in ATHENA

There is a hold on my account.

If you receive a message that there is a HOLD on your account while attempting to register in ATHENA, click on HOLD. Follow the directions to clear the hold.

How do I register for a waitlist?

Use these instructions from the UGA Office of the Registrar.

I need to change the credit hours in a variable credit course.

Examples of variable credit courses include ARST 4930: Internship in Art and GRSC 7770: Graduate Teaching Seminar.

View this video to learn how to change the credit hours in ATHENA.

How do I see if a class is for Art majors only in ATHENA?

Some of the courses we offer are open to any UGA student, some are restricted to Art majors or minors, and some are restricted to specific areas of concentration. Search for a class in ATHENA using this link and find the "Restrictions" heading (see below).

I'm trying to register for a class, but I'm getting the following Registration Add Error message from ATHENA: “Prerequisite Course(s) Not Met"

Athena screenshot

You are receiving this message because you have not taken the prerequisites.

If you are interested in this course, enroll in the prerequisite course this semester so that you may take the course you've attempted to add in the future. Prerequisites can be found in the Bulletin.

Contact the instructor of the course for further discussion regarding prerequisites. If permission is given by the instructor to enroll in the course without the prerequisites, provide them with the course number, course CRN, your 81#, and a link to this form TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR.

I'm trying to register for a class, but I'm getting the following Registration Add Error message from ATHENA:

Athena screenshot

This message indicates the course is full. If you would like to register for a course that is full, contact the instructor of the course and ask for special permission. If permission is given, provide them with the course number, course CRN, your 81#, and a link to this form TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR.

PLEASE NOTE: Refer to the Course Opening Dates above. It is likely that Dodd instructors will not enroll students into full classes until AFTER all Dodd classes have been open to all UGA students.

If you are given permission for a capacity override, the course will still appear to be full. Enter the CRN of the course into a blank on the Add Classes Worksheet at the bottom of the Add/Drop page via ATHENA, and submit changes - see image below.
