Dodd Students Create Campus Mural

Two Dodd students and one recent alumnus created and installed a colorful mural on campus in Snelling Dining Commons. Under the supervision of Professor Joseph Norman, recent graduate Gunnar Tarsa (BFA ’17) and current undergraduates Young Lim Lee and Hannah Duggan recently completed a 20-foot mural titled Word Space commissioned by Darnell Tate, Operational Manager at Snelling Dining Commons. Danielle Bouton, Associate Director of Meal Plan Operations, expressed her excitement about the student work and Darnell commented,

Works by Mary Ruth Moore is an exhibition of the photographic works of emeritus faculty Mary Ruth Moore, who has taught art at the University of Georgia for over forty years. The exhibition is on view through September 1 in the Bridge Gallery in the School of Art. An opening reception and celebration of Moore's work and contriubutionf to the School of Art will be held on Saturday, August 19 from 5:00–7:00 pm.

As part of the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences International Faculty Exchange, Paul Seawright comes to the University’s Lamar Dodd School of Art this month. Seawright is a photographer who teaches at the University of Ulster’s Belfast School of Art in Ireland. While at the Dodd, Paul will be working through editing a new series of work and critiquing the work of Dodd graduate students.

Kaleidoscope is the 16th Annual First-year Studio Core Exhibiton at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. This annual exhibition showcases student work from the art school’s first year program with artworks from Drawing I, Drawing II, Color and Composition, 3D Design, and Ideation & Methodologies. Kaleidoscope includes a display of the Sassafras Restoration Project, in which students from three courses collaborated on an intervention in the natural environment to restore the second largest sassafras tree in Georgia.

Graduate student Will Major was recently featured on the photography website Ain’t Bad. Major is a second-year MFA student in the Photography department at the School of Art. Ain’t Bad selected Major’s work from a recent call for entry, citing its wild subject matter and blend of still life imagery and portraiture in an article accompanied by extensive images.

The Sassafras Restoration Project

Georgia's second largest sassafras tree is located in Athens, Georgia, and Dodd students have lent a helping hand in its restoration. The tree has been unable to maintain the healthy, woodland–type soil it needs at its roots, which have also been de–barked by horses.

Twenty-one new graduate students join the student body at the Dodd this fall ready to delve into studies in art history, art education, and studio art and design. They describe themselves as “magpies” and “ice cream aficionados,” and their interests range from 60s DIY manuals to contemporary Chinese-American art. These grads arrive in Athens from as far as Santa Maria, California and Olympia, Washington and come from diverse undergraute backgrounds with undergraduate studies in history and graphic design at institutions such as the University of Nebraska and Sooreh University in Iran.

The School of Art is pleased to announce that James Enos has joined the faculty, where he will serve as head of the Studio Art Core program. Enos is an artist and educator who brings a background in design to a diverse set of concerns including pedagogy, urbanism, sculpture, and social practice. Studio Art Core is a set of courses that structures the experience of undergraduate art students at the School of Art.

Losing; Keeping is a personal exhibition that explores attachment, memory, distance, and time. Featuring MFA candidate in Painting + Drawing, Annemarie DiCamillo and Los-Angeles based artist Luke McCusker, the collaborative works were created over a period of two years and hinge on poetic and nonverbal interaction.

Their focus is on the conceptual practice of using publications as a distributable exhibition space that seeks to reach a global audience. Accessibility and affordability are paramount to their mission.
