Jewelry & Metals Assistant Professor Demi Thomloudis is included in the group exhibition “Shelter: Crafting A Safe Home,” opening September 8, 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA. “Shelter: Crafting A Safe Home” brings together work by fourteen artists that address shelter, refuge, and protection. The included works focus on safe housing as a basic human need, and the exhibition aims to create awareness and open dialogue around this social issue.

On the evening of Saturday, August 26, 2017, a group of art and wrestling enthusiasts gathered in an Athens field for a night of open-air wrestling organized by School of Art MFA Candidate Kaleena Stasiak. sumHER Slam, a performative evening of women’s wrestling, featured several graduate students from the School as well as a diverse local community of artists and supporters.

Color Works is currently on view in C-U-B-E,  the experimental design lab through September 15, 2017. Color Works is a series of color sequences created for a First Year Odyssey course taught by Assistant Professor Moon Jung Jang titled Color Design in Building Abstract Narratives. This study explores the relationship between color properties and arrangements, and results in various hues and values that create implied directions and movements in space.

Student Profile: Laura Lake Smith
PhD in Art History, 2017

Laura Lake Smith arrived at the Lamar Dodd School of Art with a clear goal. As stated in her application to the PhD program, it was her intention to write a dissertation on the work of contemporary American artist Richard Tuttle. Entitled Imaging the In-between: The Serial Art of Richard Tuttle, that dissertation was completed and defended in spring 2017, the culmination of a long and rewarding journey toward understanding the work of one of the century’s most enigmatic artists.

Graphic Design professor Julie Spivey is part of an interdisciplinary team of four collaborating on the project Mapping Deep Blue Habitat in a Changing Climate, that was recently awarded $100,000 by the National Academy of Sciences Keck Futures Initiative. The project aims to create a tool that will visualize deep ocean habitats. Spivey is collaborating with scientists to help present clear and compelling visual material that accurately depicts the data related to changes in different ocean habitats.

Alumnus Philip Juras recently opened an exhibition of paintings, Landscapes of Chingaza, that celebrate the 40th anniversary of Chingaza National Park, Colombia. Landscapes of Chingaza is on view at the Biblioteca Virgilio Barco in Bogotá, Colombia until September 2017. Juras attended the opening of the exhibition and toured it with President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos.
