Dodd Students to be Honored by the City of Rutledge

On October 25, 2017 students from Lamar Dodd School of Art will be honored by the City of Rutledge, GA for their outstanding work creating the town’s Memorial Day mural Never Forgotten, completed this past May. The mural honors the veterans who have served in the United States military, which was commissioned by the Rutledge Garden Club. The group of students will be honored with a bronze plaque that bears the names of the students.

Hannah Batsel (BFA '11, Printmaking and Book Arts) is a shortlist artist for the 2017 Emerging Voices recognition awarded by the American Craft Council. Batsel is featured in the October/November 2017 issue of American Craft Magazine for her work, Out of the Dark/Into the Water.

Students at the Lamar Dodd School of Art recently completed a new mural in the town of Tignall, Georgia. Hannah Duggan (Painting), Katherine Eidson (Drawing), Young Lim Lee (Painting), Benjamin Thrash (Art Education), and Lucy Wellborn (Graphic Design) worked for over a month on the project with student project leader Gunnar Tarsa, who recently graduated with a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of Art. The cross-departmental team was supervised by painting professor Joseph Norman.

Marie Svoboda, a conservator in the Department of Antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum, will deliver the 2017 Shouky Shaheen lecture on the APPEAR project on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 5:30 pm in room S150 titled, The APPEAR Collaboration: A Comparative Study of Ancient Romano-Egyptian Mummy Portraits.

Michael Kemling (Ph.D Art History '13) organized three panels at University of North Georgia (UNG) campuses around the recent controversy over Confederate monuments. The first was held in Gainesville on October 2, 2017, with more than 100 in attendance. The second was held in Watkinsville on October 9, 2017, and the third will be at Dahlonega on October 16, 2017.

Mirage is a group exhibition by thirty Studio Core Color and Composition students taught by Professor Imi Hwangbo. Working in small collaborative groups, students created large scale drawings in black masking tape on the walls and floor of the Studio Core Project Space.
