Tom Polk Exhibition at State Botanical Gardens

While Tom Polk’s (1940-2014) professional life was fulfilled as an associate professor and Area Chairman of Art History at the University of Georgia, he was also a life-long artist. He earned a combined undergraduate degree from Brown and the Rhode Island School of Design in both art history and studio art. At peace in nature, landscapes were his most frequent subject and the State Botanical Garden was one of his favorite haunts.

School of Art Graduation Spring 2016 Ceremony & Reception

The Lamar Dodd School of Art held its spring graduation ceremony at midday on Wednesday, May 11 in the nearby UGA Performing Arts Center with a reception following in the atrium of the Dodd. The commencement address was delivered by Carter Foster, a 1989 graduate of the School with a degree in Art History, who currently serves as a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Jessica Machacek + Ella Weber: Suspended Preservatives

UGA MFA candidate Jessica Machacek and MFA candidate at the University of Kansas Ella Weber are two artists who examine, through sculpture and photography, the physical and psychological presence of everyday objects. Their works blend concepts of the found and the fabricated, the real and the synthetic as the artists explore a late-capitalist mode of production that relies on and creates overconsumption, superficial realities, and constructed happiness.

Kevin Varney: Singularity

Just outside Gallery 101 in the Atrium, Post-MFA Fellow in Sculpture, Kevin Varney exhibits a kinetic light installation. Through the use of artificial light phenomena, this exhibition places scientific theory and transcendental beliefs within arms length of one another. A space is created, in which artifice and artifact propel curiosity for, and perhaps experience of, the paraphysical.
