“I have now seen sucrose beaches and water a very bright blue. I have seen an all-red leisure suit with flared lapels. I have smelled suntan lotion spread over 2,100 pounds of hot flesh. I have been addressed as “Mon” in three different nations. I have seen 500 upscale Americans dance the Electric Slide. I have seen sunsets that looked computer enhanced. I have (very briefly) joined a conga line.” So begins David Foster Wallace’s infamous treatise on cruise life “Shipping Out” published in Harpers in 1996.

Art and Education for Social Justice Symposium 2020

Social Justice Symposium

The University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art and The School of Social Work (in partnership with Florida State University), are hosting the 10th annual Art and Education for Social Justice Symposium. This symposium follows an interdisciplinary approach into how art and education can support social justice. The goal of this symposium is to include and amplify voices that are often on the margins of academia and to share the methodologies and results of practices that strive to have a direct public impact.

“We returned home tired and with heads spinning, but also undeniably energized by the knowledge that so many artists and intellectuals are dedicated—with stunning, often provocative results—to the practice of contemporary art and design.”

-  Dr. Isabelle Loring Wallace, Associate Professor of Contemporary Art, Associate Director of Research and Graduate Studies

Fountain: Melissa Brown & Jaime Bull

Once purely functional, fountains have for centuries served as a form of spectacle, the marking of triumph and the grandeur of civilizations. Just think of the Trevi Fountain in Rome filled with sparkling coins of promised return or the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas, elegant sprays of water set to the croon of Frank Sinatra. Melissa Brown’s paintings and Jaime Bull’s sculptures in this exhibition play broadly with notions associated with fountains including the source from which inspiration spurts, to gush forth, and the intricate, purely decorative function of such architecture.

Color the World Bright, a group led by Lamar Dodd School of Art Professor Joseph Norman recently completed the restoration of several historical murals in rural Georgia. In this project, Norman and students create and restore public murals of a bygone time. In restoring these “ghost- signs” he says, “A mural becomes a matter of civic pride…”. Participants in the group include Dodd students Lia Davis, Katie Eidson, Benjamin Thrash, Elizabeth Qardan, and Adjunct Professor, Meredith Lachin.
