Danielle O’Steen, art historian and independent curator, will give a Zoom lecture in conjunction with the exhibition “Lou Stovall: Of Land and Origins.” O’Steen is curator of “Lou Stovall: On Inventions and Color,” on view at the Kreeger Museum in Washington, D.C., January 20 – April 16, 2022.

Spring Exhibitions Opening Reception

The Dodd Galleries are pleased to announce four new exhibitions opening on Thursday, March 3rd. Please join us that evening in the galleries for an opening reception from 5-7pm. The exhibitions, Stacks on Stacks, Entangled Memories, The Black Artists Alliance Juried Exhibition, and The 2022 Science and Medical Illustration Exhibition, will run through March 31st.

Wall Works: Luka Carter

Wall Works is a program at the Dodd Galleries where we invite an artist to create a semester-long, site-specific installation in the Plaza Gallery. Dodd MFA candidate, Luka Carter, presents Workbook, a mural which imagines a start from zero as pages from a notebook full of crooked lines given to a child.

Camelot to Counterculture: Clothing and Society in the 1960s

Join guest speaker Madelyn Shaw for an illustrated talk exploring the myths and realities of 1960s fashion.

A discussion between Shaw and Ashley Callahan, curator of the new exhibition “Frankie Welch’s Americana: Fashion, Scarves, and Politics” will follow the lecture. This event is co-sponsored by the University of Georgia Press, the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and the Lucy Hargrett Draper Center and Archives for the Study of the Rights of Women in History and Law.

Entangled Memories is an exhibit that features new works in clay by Dodd MFA candidate, Huey Lee. The works are manipulated to appear as if they were strings that are then shaped into everyday objects. The objects represents Lee's investigation into his identity as it relates to history, trauma, and cultural differences. Reconstructing and re-configuring his memory into clay, Lee explores his relationship to objects to better interpret his lived experience.

The 2022 Science and Medical Illustration Exhibition, the 30th installation, will be on display from March 3 through March 31, 2022. The exhibition includes work from the undergraduate students in Science Illustration at the University of Georgia along with work from the graduate students in Medical Illustration at Augusta University. The judges are professional medical and science illustration who work in and around the Athens area.

The Black Artists Alliance Juried Exhibition features work from Black artists at the University of Georgia selected by Professor of Art, Diane Edison. The BAA is committed to creating more opportunities and visibility for Black students who are underrepresented in the institution, simultaneously enriching the schools’ commitments to solidarity with its Black students. This exhibition gives the School of Art an opportunity to celebrate the work of Black artists and creates a devoted space of visibility.
