Artist Talk: Yatika Starr Fields

image

Yatika Starr Fields (Osage, Cherokee and Creek) is a painter known for his vibrant, large-scale murals. His oil paintings range from pure abstractions to images interlaced with symbolic narrative elements. In 2019, Fields produced a series of lithographs and monotypes during a residency at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts. In this talk, Fields will discuss his larger body of work, with a focus on that print series. “Sun Carrier Series: Scorpion Bowl” is currently on view in the exhibition “Collective Impressions: Modern Native American Printmakers” through January 30.

Lisa Tan: My Pictures of You

In Lisa Tan's video My Pictures of You (2017–19), the artist thinks of images of Mars as a death mask of Earth, captured millions of years in the future, yet witnessed in the present. Compelled by photographs from NASA’s expeditions depicting Mars’ topography, Tan senses how the planet’s dry lake beds, undulating sand dunes, and horizon could be our own. Their striking familiarity transports her to the desert terrain of the American Southwest where she was raised.

New Terrain is an installation that features the work of Dodd MFA candidate Ethan Snow. Through works painstakingly drawn in pen and ink and translated to print through photolithography, Snow explores the ways in which the natural world has dramatically changed since the advent of mass production and digitalization.

For over a year, the UGA Cortona International Center programs were put on hold due to the pandemic. After an extended hiatus, Cortona resumed programming hosting approximately 40 students and faculty for the 2021 Fall Semester program. This year’s Cortona exhibition, known as “La Mostra” (The Show), presents the experience and work of Fall 2021 students and faculty creating art in the studios of the Kehoe Center and engaging with the city of Cortona once again. La Mostra will run from Monday, January 10th, through Friday, January 21st, 2022, with no closing ceremony.
