Next week, the Lamar Dodd School of Art is excited to welcome our first Visiting Artist of the 2022-2023 academic year, Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Students, faculty, and the public are invited to our downtown gallery the Athenaeum on September 1st at 6 PM to hear Rasheed discuss her practice against the backdrop of her solo exhibition SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH OPERATOR.

The Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series has brought over 80 distinguished guests to the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia since 2002. Visiting Artists and Scholars spend three days on campus interacting with students and faculty, the culmination of which is a public lecture on the subject of the artist’s or scholar’s work.

Visiting Artist Lecture | Troy Lamarr Chew II

Another West Coast artist joins us next week as the third creative participating in the 2022-2023 Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series. Troy Lamarr Chew II is a Los Angeles-born and based painter who skillfully and subversively uses traditional European painting techniques "to reframe their exclusion of Blackness." In his most recent series, Slanguage, Chew, a former dancer, renders a layered pastiche of the original cultural references attributed to popular dances through hip hop slang, e.g.

Douglas Kearney: An Experimental Dialogue

Kearney

Kearney is also the author of Buck Studies (Fence Books, 2016), which was awarded the CLMP Firecracker Award for Poetry, the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Award, and the silver medal for the California Book Award in Poetry. BOMB says Buck Studies “remaps the 20th century in a project that is both lyrical and epic, personal and historical.” Kearney describes the non-traditional layout of his poems as “performative typography.” On the relationship between his poetry and politics, he notes: “For me, the political is a part of how I see the world.

Intangible Memories continues Dodd MFA candidate, Huey Lee’s investigation into the condition of clay and how it exists as a relic of Lee’s emotional record expressed as a visual language. Lee sees his practice as a way to convey his feelings about the past as spoken words often fails him. “Investigating inner emotions and memories allow me to better understand my own identity within society,” he explains.
