The Wonder of the World: Merleau-Ponty, Cézanne, & the Meaning of Painting

Cezanne, Still life with compotier, 1879-82

Throughout his career, the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty maintained an intense interest in painting, and especially in the painting of Paul Cézanne. Wall Works: Harrison D. Walker

Wall Works is a program at the Dodd Galleries where we invite an artist to create a semester long, site-specific wall installation in the Plaza Gallery. Harrison D. Walker’s Portals is a multi-component project exploring color, chemistry and psychological perception. Each Portal is made with the principle of the photogram, utilizing light and pressure, to create endless variations. Similar to a Rorschach Test, each print is a variation of a repeated circular form, which explores how the viewer perceives variations in texture, surface, color, image, and time.

Carol John: Legion Pool

Legion Pool, the University of Georgia's storied watering hole for the past 80 years, is the inspiration behind Athens-based artist Carol John’s new series of paintings. John, whose paintings generally display abstraction full of frenzied line and color, presents a new restrained sensibility in these works. Making loose references to the painted lines on the bottom of the pool, the meditative act of swimming laps, and the various blues that reflect throughout the atmosphere, the paintings atomizes the experience of a hot summer day at Legion Pool.
