Beverly Penn Lecture | Ann Orr Morris Memorial Fund Visiting Artist in Jewelry and Metalwork

Beverly Penn

The Ann Orr Morris Memorial Fund presents the Visiting Artist in Jewelry and Metalwork Artist, Beverly Penn. Penn is presenting a lecture on March 4, 2020, at 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM in room S150. Open to the public.

The impulse to arrange the wild variety of the natural world to fit an intellectual symmetry is a fundamental human urge. Beverly Penn’s sculpture speaks to the power of this desire. Her work explores the contradicting need to both idealize and modify the natural environment.

The China Trade and Emerging Imperial Aesthetics in Federal America

.

Immediately after the Revolution, American ships embarked for China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other destinations. Viewing themselves as citizens of a rising imperial state, Americans imported vast quantities of luxury goods and arts, especially porcelain, silks, lacquerware, painting, sculpture, furniture, wallpaper, and textiles. This direct trade made Asian visual arts and other materials less expensive and more available to all Americans, particularly in the port cities of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Charleston, and Salem.

Golden Hour

Read more about Golden Hour Log in to post comments

Golden Hour refers to the hour before sunset when everything seems to glow, the hour when shadows are long, and the passage of time is suddenly visible. In this exhibition, Dodd Graduate Candidates, Mary Gordon, Alex McClay and Ciel Rodriguez reconsider the conventionally white-lit gallery space by creating an ephemeral environment reminiscent of that golden light.

Amiko Li: The Purpose of Disease

Amiko Li: The Purpose of Disease

Acupuncture, palm reading, cupping, psychogenics, antibiotics, herbal supplements, blood vessels, genetic testing, human versus animal, and the regeneration of limbs are just a few areas of concern in the new series of work by Dodd MFA Fellow in photography, Amiko Li. In this exhibition he examines disease, very much in the literal sense considering how we might search to heal ourselves but also metaphorically, as an immigrant, a feeling or dis-ease that accompanies living in a country that is not yours.
