Stacie Maya Johnson: Recent Paintings

I flew out of New York on March 10th with the foreboding sense that something really crazy was about to go down. I was in the city for the spring art fairs and held a series of studio visits with artists throughout my stay. I also met up with friends for dinner and saw a Broadway show. During intermission, I laughed with the woman next to me at the bathroom sink as we stood there, washing our hands for longer than usual. “I think of it as my new ‘me time’” she said. It was all so funny and quaint then.

Makeover Kingdom

I recently went to Target for the first time since quarantine began. I told myself I was going for paper towels, but deep down I knew I was searching for the vague euphoria I once had when browsing the shelves of big box stores. Finding wares and playthings I never knew I needed but also knew I could maybe afford. The sheer comfort of the abundance of things. And yet, on this trip the entire enterprise felt frivolous. After four months of staying home and making do, everything looked cheap and unnecessary.

Retrieval of Materials From Spring 2020

In an effort to return student materials and projects from the Spring 2020 semester, the School of Art has designated Wed. July 22 – Friday July 31 for retrieval of these items. The first letter in students' last name will determine their dates of access. Please read through the entire list of rules and requirements below. Our first priority is keeping everyone as safe as possible.
