Sarah Crain meets with Art History majors, in addition to Intended Art and Intended Art History students.

Debbie Montgomery meets with AB Interdisciplinary Art & Design, ArtX, Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Fabric Design, Jewelry & Metals, and Sculpture students.

Alison Piazza meets with Art Education, Graphic Design, IDS Animation, and Scientific Illustration students.

Ryan Smith meets with Interior Design, Photography, and Printmaking students.

Intended Art History Majors

Art History Majors

Students who have officially been accepted to the Art History major

(have already taken ARHI 2300, 2400, and two 3000-level ARHI courses AND have had your major changed from I-Art History to Art History)

—are advised by Sarah Crain. Visit the SAGE website to make an advising appointment.

WHAT IS THE PORTFOLIO REVIEW?

You do not need a portfolio to start classes as an Art student at the University of Georgia. However, certain majors offered at the Lamar Dodd School of Art are “high demand,” meaning students must complete admission requirements (a portfolio review, progression preview, or other application process) and applicants are not guaranteed acceptance to these majors. Click here for more details.

WHAT MAJORS DOES THE LAMAR DODD SCHOOL OF ART OFFER?

The School of Art offers four different undergraduate degrees:

  • Bachelor of Art in Art History
  • Bachelor of Art in Studio Art  & Design (broad study of art, various areas of focus)
  • Bachelor of Fine Art in Art Education
  • Bachelor of Fine Art in Art with an Emphasis in: (Art:X Expanded Forms, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Fabric Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Jewelry & Metalwork, Photography, Printmaking, Scientific Illustration, and Sculpture).

For further information go to Undergraduate Studies.

How do I apply to the School of Art?

I AM IN HIGH SCHOOL AND WANT TO ATTEND UGA. HOW DO I PROCEED?

Incoming freshman must apply to UGA as a first-year student through Undergraduate Admissions. The application, deadlines, and other important information can be found on the Admissions website.

I WANT TO TRANSFER TO UGA. HOW DO I PROCEED?

Transfer students coming to UGA from another institution/university must apply to UGA as Transfer Students through Undergraduate Admissions. The application, deadlines, and other important information can be found on the Admissions website.

The goal of any transfer student is to transfer in as many Art Foundation courses as you can (Drawing I, Drawing II, Color Composition, 3D Design, Art History I, and Art History II – ProSeminar in Art is a UGA-only class). If you are not able to complete all of the Art Foundations before transferring, we highly suggest transferring in with at least credit for Drawing I and either Color Composition or 3D Design, at a bare minimum.

I AM A TRANSFER STUDENT AT A LOCAL USG (UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF GEORGIA) SCHOOL. I AM TAKING SOME BASIC ART COURSES, HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY WILL TRANSFER?

The goal of any transfer student is to transfer in as many Art Foundation courses as you can (Drawing I, Drawing II, Color Composition, 3D Design, Art History I, and Art History II – ProSeminar in Art is a UGA-only class). If you are not able to complete all of the Art Foundations before transferring, we highly suggest transferring in with at least credit for Drawing I and either Color Composition or 3D Design, at a bare minimum.

Here is the list of USG schools from which the Lamar Dodd School of Art often transfers student credit.

I AM A TRANSFER STUDENT NOT AT A USG (UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF GEORGIA) SCHOOL OR I AM OUT OF STATE. I AM TAKING SOME BASIC ART COURSES, HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY WILL TRANSFER?

Again, it is the goal of any transfer student is to transfer in as many Art Foundation courses as you can (Drawing I, Drawing II, Color Composition, 3D Design, Art History I, and Art History II – ProSeminar in Art is a UGA-only class).

If you have taken some of these courses at a school that is either not a USG school or is an out of state school that is not on this list, your art courses will need to be evaluated by our faculty in order to possibly receive credit. You may be asked to provide a course syllabus (check the course catalog of your original institution) and samples of your coursework.

Please note that we cannot pre-approve transfer courses—these must be evaluated by the appropriate area chairs once you are an accepted student at UGA.

I AM A TRANSFER STUDENT. IF I TRANSFER TO UGA, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO GRADUATE?

The BFA major requirements are made up of 60 hours worth of studio and art history courses. In many departments and at other universities, students finish all (or most of) their core requirements within the first two years they are in college and then take two years of major classes and electives. As art majors at UGA, students start taking major courses their first semester in school. The course of study is sequential and prerequisites must be met. The reality of all BFA studio programs is that they take approximately 3–4 years to complete no matter how much ACADEMIC CORE you have done.

WHAT IS COURSEWORK LIKE FOR A FIRST-YEAR ART STUDENT?

During the first year for an incoming student, you will take both Art & Academic Core classes. Below is a rough breakdown:

First Semester:

Drawing I
Color Composition
OR 3D Design
Art History I
ProSeminar in Art
(Fall-only course)
One or two CORE classes
FYOS First-Year Odyssey (required of all UGA first-year students)

Second Semester:

Either ARST 2010 or 2020 or ARID 2020, depending on Intended Area of Emphasis
Color Composition
OR 3D Design
Art History II

One or two CORE classes

ONCE I FINISH MY ART FOUNDATION CLASSES, WHEN DO I APPLY TO MY PARTICULAR AREA?

Typically, most students apply to their major during their third semester.

Once all art foundations are completed in the first & second semester, students then move on to take their 2000-level intro courses and apply to their program via area portfolio review.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMPETITIVE MAJOR AT THE SCHOOL OF ART?

The most competitive major at the School of Art is Graphic Design. For any student wanting to apply to the Graphic Design major, we highly suggest a backup art plan (such as Photography, Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Scientific Illustration, etc.).

In order to apply to the program, students must enroll in ARGD 2010 Graphic Survey.

Graphic Design accepts a maximum of 30 students a year with about a 60% passing acceptance rate into the program.

If you apply to Graphic Design and are not accepted on your first try, you may consider switching to your backup art plan or you can apply again the next year, which may delay your graduation date.

IS THERE A GPA REQUIREMENT TO BE AN ART MAJOR?

All students within the School of Art must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and earn a C or better in all major courses, including Art History courses.

DOES THE SCHOOL OF ART OR UGA LOOK AT OUTSIDE PORTFOLIOS FOR ACCEPTING STUDENTS?

No. Acceptance to UGA is contingent on your overall admissions profile including SAT scores, transcripts, etc.

DO YOU ACCEPT AP SCORES FOR ART?

Yes. The School of Art now accepts art AP scores.

UGA also accepts AP scores for CORE classes (History, Math, Science, etc.), depending on the score. AP scores are addressed at your advising appointment at orientation once you are an accepted UGA student.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FINANCIAL AID

I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID. WHO DO I CONTACT?

If you need more information or have questions about tuition or financial aid, please contact the UGA Financial Aid Office or call 706-542-6147.

I WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ON SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE SCHOOL OF ART. WHO DO I CONTACT?

The Lamar Dodd School of Art offers several scholarships for students. If you have further questions, please contact our Art Graduate School Office (works with both Undergraduate & Graduate scholarships) or call 706-542-1636.

ADVISING QUESTIONS

HOW DO I KNOW WHO MY ADVISOR IS?

To find out who your assigned advisor is, log on to SAGE with your UGA MyID and password. Your advisor's appointment calendar will be listed.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO RESCHEDULE OR I MISS MY ADVISING APPOINTMENT?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your advising appointment, you must do so 24 hours in advance on SAGE. If done with less than 24 hours notice, SAGE will not let you cancel your current appointment and move your appointment day/time, which may result in you no-showing your appointment.

If you miss/forget your advising appointment, you will not be able to reschedule another appointment on SAGE. Instead, you will need to come to your advisor’s No-Show Walk-In Hours (usually are scheduled around the middle of the semester). The days/times are set-up around the advisor’s available time- this is first come, first served.

**In order to avoid dealing with this, PLEASE show up to your advising appointment on time**

MINORS

HOW DO I DECLARE A STUDIO ART OR DESIGN & MEDIA MINOR?

Find information about declaring Minors here.

WHAT DOES EACH MINOR CONSIST OF?

The Studio Art Minor consists of 18 credit hours, and the Design & Media minor consists of 15 credit hours. Details can be found here.

CAN I MINOR IN GRAPHIC DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY, ETC.?

The Studio Art Minor does not have a particular Area of Emphasis or focus; it is a broad study of art and design. If you want to gain skills in Graphic Design, for example, you may be able to take one or two Graphic Design classes, depending on availability, but your minor will simply reflect “Studio Art Minor”. For a more design-concentrated option, the new Design & Media Minor focuses on time-based media, photography, and design principles.

ART HISTORY MINOR:

The Art History minor consists of 21 credit hours:

  • Art History I
  • Art History II
  • Nine hours of 3000-level art history courses
  • Six hours of 4000-level art history courses
HOW QUICKLY CAN I COMPLETE A MINOR?

Due to the limited amount of studio classes that a student can take each semester, the minimum amount of time to complete a minor would be 2 semesters (if three minor courses were taken each semester).

CHANGING MAJOR TO ART

I WANT TO CHANGE MY MAJOR TO ART/ DOUBLE MAJOR. HOW DO I DO THAT?

If you are currently enrolled at UGA and wish to change your major to art, visit Athena –> My Programs –> Add Major or Minor and select Art Intended.  (You will drop the Intended once you are accepted into your Area of Emphasis.)
