For the second year in a row, MFA students at the Lamar Dodd School of Art are participating in Atlanta Art Week. This year’s exhibition HOMEWORK is a collaboration with Georgia State University's Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design that features 19 graduate students enrolled in two of Georgia's anchor art university programs.

Curated by Athens-based artist Didi Dunphy, HOMEWORK will be on view at The Works, a mixed-use development in Atlanta’s Upper Westside, from October 1 through October 6, 2024. Join the artists for an exhibition reception on Tuesday, October 1st from 6 – 8 pm at 1295 Chattahoochee Avenue NW, Suite 200B.

Atlanta Art Week, founded in 2022, partners with over 20 galleries, museums, and arts institutions across the metropolitan region of Atlanta to spotlight a rich variety of cultural programs. The second installment of Atlanta Art Week coincides with the inaugural installment of the Atlanta Art Fair, a celebration of the dynamic arts community of Atlanta and the greater American South that will take place at Pullman Yards from October 3 – 6, 2024.

“Visiting these students' workspaces and studios has been invigorating,” says Didi Dunphy. “A sense of experimentation, wonder and hard work is evident in their pursuit. This exhibition is an exciting opportunity to preview an upcoming cohort of Georgia-based artists launching into the professional field, as well as offering a fun collegial collaboration between the University of Georgia and Georgia State University.”

Second- and third-year graduate candidates in HOMEWORK, working in a range of media, including metals, fiber, photography, and papermaking, explore concepts such as climate concern, identity politics, beauty, and storytelling.

Celebrating this partnership, Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Director Michael White remarked, “At Georgia State University, we value studio artists who approach their work in an experimental and collaborative way. We welcome the opportunity to work alongside talented peers at institutions like the University of Georgia.” White added, “With our former director and alumnus Joseph Peragine leading the program at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, a natural partnership turned into a rich opportunity for our second- and third-year MFAs. I am eager to see the work Didi Dunphy has curated for the show, which will be an Atlanta Art Week highlight for our school community.”
