Artist Talk | Tokie Rome-Taylor

Tokie Rome-Taylor headshot

Photo-based artist Tokie Rome-Taylor focuses on questions that stem from ethnographic and historical research. Her work is inspired by the material, spiritual and familial culture of descents of southern African Americans. Children, family heirlooms and the real or imagined histories of these children's families and their ancestors collide to spark conversation around material culture and familial and cultural traditions of African Americans in the South.

MEAT-a-physics

Activated by human presence, homes are curated living spaces furnished with ideals, objects, and memories gleaned from individual life experience  — but what does it mean to be living at home, and what influences our personal iterations of domestic time and space? MEAT-a-physics is an exhibition that pulls together the work of eight different MFA candidate artists at the Lamar Dodd School of Art to answer this question of a predisposed reality turned askew, offering new perspectives and criticisms on what meanings the concept of domesticity continues to carry in the 21st Century.

Gabrielle Barnett: Desirable

Flesh, like bubblegum, is soft, sticky, and pliable. In pristine shape, both flesh and gum are desirable. Distinctly, however, chewed gum is disposable, invisible, and hard to look at. Individuals that have fat bodies are frequently socially isolated and denied access to societal structures. Those of us who are fat are continuously reminded of our body sizes and how they do not fit into the world. Shame plays a large role in enforcing fatphobia in our society.

Performative Lecture: The Deli Diaries

Deli Diaries promo photo

As a 31-year-old delicatessen clerk searching for love, laughter and a well-balanced lunch, Nebraska-based artist, Ella Weber will share what’s behind the counter in her debut novel, The Deli Diaries. Struggling to find purpose slicing meat, three existential slices of ham hover above. Who ham I? What ham I? Where ham I? Across the counter, Weber blurs the line between employee and customer, performance and reality, art and life. Join us for the author's performative artist lecture, presented as a Stand-Up Comedy-Microsoft PowerPoint-TED Talk-poetry reading.
