Congratulations to Dodd Professor Michael Marshall, who has been awarded a UGA 2018 Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship. The Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship is the University’s highest recognition for excellence in instruction. As associate director of curriculum for the School of Art, Marshall has spearheaded curriculum development with new programming emphasizing ideation and interdisciplinary practice. He has been active in integrating service-learning in his courses to hone students’ skills while engaging the concerns of the local community and the environment. Marshall also received the 2017 Honored Educator Award from the Society for Photographic Education Southeast Chapter as well as UGA’s 2015 Service-Learning Teaching Excellence Award.
Marshall recently established the Social Ecology Lab in the School of Art, an experimental arts research lab dedicated to advancing sustainability and resilience through the arts. Serving as a resource hub for artists, the studio’s mission is to initiate and facilitate collaborative projects with scientific and social researchers across campus, aiming to develop and research methods for the arts to impact and enhance the local ecosystem, and to connect with and enrich the community.
