School of Art Editorial Style & Usage Guide

Top 10 Things to Know for Digital and Print Communications

Note that UGA uses AP Style for journalistic copy (non-academic, scholarly writing) which prefers concise language and minimum character usage.
For other use usage questions, find UGA's complete Editorial Style Guide here.

1. This the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Never refer to the School as LDSOA.

Refer to the School as “the Lamar Dodd School of Art” or the “School of Art” if space doesn't allow.

On second reference: "the School of Art" or "the School" is acceptable.

UGA School of Art is acceptable use in limited-character situations like social media.

“the Dodd" can be used in article or event copy to avoid repititous use of the full School name as in the following:

Demi Smith joined the School of Art faculty as an instructor in studio foundations. Smith had previously visited the Dodd in 2009 as a visiting artist.

“Dodd" should only be used as a descriptive in an article title to save space as in the following:

Dodd MFA Alumnus Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

2. Try to avoid referring to the School as ‘we’ in articles or posts

(ok to use "we" to save space in social media…)

3. Publication and exhibitions titles should be set in italic.

Italicize the following:

  • Books titles
  • Publication titles
  • Artwork titles
  • Exhibitions titles
  • Song Titles, TV or Radio Series
(in article title entry field where italic isn't possible, use quote marks.)

Use "quotation marks" to set off titles of shorter works:

  • short stories, magazine or newspaper article title, poems
  • episodes of television or radio series
  • lectures and speeches

Wallace co-edited Contemporary Art About Architecture: A Strange Utility published by Princeton Press.

OR

Professor Wallace’s article on Jasper Johns, “Johns: Impending Death” will appear in the forthcoming issue of Art Journal.

Note on using real apostrophe and quote characters:

Click on the Insert Special Characters tool above to access proper apostrophes and quote characters. Avoid using incorrect, straight "prime" characters as in the example below:

Professor Wallace's article on Jasper Johns, "Johns: Impending Death" will appear in the forthcoming issue of Art Journal.

4. Capitalize MOST Words in Post Titles Except Articles

....like of, and, & the and 'in.'
ex:

Joseph Norman’s Work on Display in New Exhibition, “Go Tell It: Civil Rights Photography”

5. She is Wallace.

On second and following references always use an individual's last name, never "Eileen" or "Isabelle".

6. Job Titles: Professor or professor?

Use lowercase unless the title is directly before the name, for ex:.

Smith is assistant professor of printmaking.

Associate Professor Isabelle Wallace recently published her monograph, Jasper Johns: Done .

(Do not refer to Professors as “Dr." unless they hold a D.V.M. or M.D. degree.)

More info on job titles on the UGA site here.

Guidelines specifically related to professorships titles here.

7. Single Spacing after Punctuation, even periods.

Do not use double-spaces after any punctuation. Like right there to the left after that period; or after that semi-colon.

8. Punctuate Safely

Use real dashes, not hyphens:

Use en dash (–)
—to show span of time such as “2015–16” or "from 7pm–9pm"
= option + hyphen

Use an em dash/long dash: (—) for:
—quote attribution OR to set apart in a phrase mid sentence.
= shift + option + hyphen

9. Just the facts, please.

All news, events and article posts on the site should be unbiased and concise. Do not editorialize.

  • No gratuitous adjectives.
  • No 'best' or 'strong' program, for ex., unless it's specific and concrete like 'highly-ranked...'

10. Avoid acronyms if possible and only on second usage.

Write out the full names of associations and organizations.
Show the acronym in parenthesis immediately after the full name if you need to refer to the group using only the acronym on second reference as in the following:

The 2016 MFA exhibition, Whole Milk, will be on view from May 5–6 at the Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA).

Associate Professor Shindelman presented her lecture at the annual conference of the College Art Association (CAA). Shindelman was invited to CAA by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
