Research Focus

Lindsey’s research explores the history of design through the intersection of traditional skills and contemporary creative practice. Her research engages communities working to preserve these material histories, linking design’s past with its potential. As an apprentice at Hatch Show Print, Nashville’s 144-year-old letterpress print shop, Lindsey learned printing techniques from experienced printers and embraced a unique blend of old tech and fresh design. The implication of printing posters for the NFL and other high-profile clients on 100-year-old presses was not lost on her, and continues to fuel ongoing projects and workshops that reflect on our industry’s history and the role of the printer-designer throughout. By combining analog techniques with new technologies and perspectives, Lindsey expands upon these histories and encourages her students to do the same.

 

Lindsey has extensive industry experience in many aspects of design. She has worked with marketing and advertising agencies to design national and global campaigns for Pepsi, Starbucks, NASCAR, Philips, and more. As an independent designer, she partners with nonprofits to support communities and amplify voices. A few of these partners include San Francisco AIDS Foundation, American Cancer Society, the CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. During the 2016 presidential election cycle, Lindsey’s award-winning work for the Super PAC “The Nuisance Committee” was featured by major news outlets, and was later published in Milton Glaser’s Design of Dissent: Expanded Edition.

Lindsey has previously held appointments at Cranbrook Academy of Art and Oakland University. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Maine College of Art and Design, and an MFA in Graphic Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
