Lindsay Doty is a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at the University of Georgia, specializing in Italian Renaissance art.  She received her B.A. in Art History from Georgia Southern University before enrolling in the Art History Master’s Program at UGA, where she graduated in 2011 with the thesis, “Leonardo da Vinci’s Saint Jerome in the Wilderness: An Image of Spiritual Beauty.”  Her current research examines the patronage, production, and collecting of rare Italian Renaissance images that portray the Virgin Mary as an extremely aged mother, with a particular focus placed on the artist-patron relationship between Andrea Mantegna and the Gonzaga family of Mantua. 

With the support of a travel grant, awarded by the Art History Faculty at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, Lindsay presented aspects of her old-age related research at the 2014 Sixteenth Century Society and Conference in New Orleans, and most recently, received funding from the Art History Faculty to conduct dissertation research in Northern Italy.  Outside of her own work, Lindsay has promoted research-based learning within her academic community at UGA by co-organizing the first Music and Art Research Symposium, which encouraged interdisciplinary conversation between undergraduate and graduate students.  She also served as an Instructor of Record for the Art History survey courses at LDSOA, teaching both in Athens and for the Study Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy.  In 2018, Lindsay moved from Athens to Savannah, Georgia, where she is continuing work on her dissertation.
