Research Detail
I work as a PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of Georgia. I study contemporary social movements, intersectionality in the United States, using decolonial, feminist, and black geographic thought. Specifically, I think about anti-racism, land histories, the urban/rural divide, and the persistent friction of distance in contemporary (digital dominant) organizing. This has translated into interrogating how geographies imposed by racial capitalism (prisons, plantations, suburbs, etc.) configure our political imaginations, and vice versa: how we can reconfigure, renegotiate, redefine our places. These working areas come from my ongoing organizing life, based primarily in the Hudson Valley, and are generally informed by traditions of popular education and relational organizing - modes of knowledge production that are anchored by storytelling, embodiment, intimacy, and proximity. As a geographer, I'm curious about the spatiality of these practices, and the ways that land and place inform their enactment. As I grow in this work, I am increasingly called towards engaging oral history, radio production, soundscapes, and other audio forms as important tools for reckoning with how our communities produce and contest the meaning and use of space and place.
Biography

I'm a 28 year old white, cis-femme from Birmingham, Alabama. I currently live back and forth between Hudson, New York and Athens, Georgia. Since 2010, I have been an active organizer in anti-racist, climate justice, and food justice communities in Georgia and New York, and at regional and national scales. These include the Sierra Student Coalition, the Real Food Challenge (now Uprooted & Rising), the Southern Energy Network, the Greenhorns, the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition, SURJ Hudson, and others. Before applying to graduate school, I organized with the Victory Bus Project (a service providing fresh produce and prison-visit transportation for people in New York City with loved ones incarcerated upstate); worked for the National Young Farmers Coalition (as a fundraiser, legislative organizer, and co-developer of an overdue anti-racist and equity framework); and helped my sister open a restaurant (Lil Deb’s Oasis in Hudson, NY). I've also worked as a server, line cook, bread baker, landscaper, farmer, and non-profit strategist. These days, I moonlight as an amateur professional wrestler with Southeastern Women's Wrestling, as Swiss Miss.
