Rutherfurd's current research is centered around photographs of wildfires and their destruction in Northern California and how they contribute to post-apocalyptic narratives. Similarly, his poems explore representations of ruin and explore the ways language organizes crisis, and vice versa. Additionally, he studies 20th century American poetry, image theory, word/image relations, and representations of landscape.
