In the UGA Office of Research article “11th Spotlight festival takes a tour through the arts” published last week, author Hannah Gallant showcases a variety of programs presented by the Lamar Dodd School of Art during the university's 11th annual Spotlight on the Arts Festival this past November, including the 2022 Dodd Market presented by the Dodd Ambassadors, the 4’33” Research Competition at the Athenaeum, and the Fall 2022 Shouky Shaheen Lecture by Yale University Art History Professor Tim Barringer. Read a brief excerpt below of this showcase and check out the full slideshow here.

UGA’s 2022 Spotlight on the Arts festival showcased more than 60 events and exhibitions throughout November. Now in its 11th year, the festival began with Student Spotlight on Nov. 1, featuring acts such as Young Choreographer’s Series dancers, Improv Athens, Next Act and classical music soloists from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

Other highlights of the monthlong festival included performances by the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir, University Theatre’s production of William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” and a tribute to the late Congressman John Lewis by the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. There were also concerts by several student and faculty groups from the School of Music and exhibitions at the Lamar Dodd School of Art and the College of Environment and Design.

Spotlight on the Arts is coordinated by the UGA Arts Council, a group representing the performing, visual and literary arts, as well as interdisciplinary academic units on campus. The Arts Council comprises representatives from the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, College of Environment and Design, Creative Writing Program, Department of Dance, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Georgia Museum of Art, The Georgia Review, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Hugh Hodgson School of Music, Ideas for Creative Exploration, Lamar Dodd School of Art, Mary Frances Early College of Education, Performing Arts Center, UGA Press, UGA Libraries, and Willson Center for Humanities & Arts.

Daniel Karcher, DMA in music composition, was the grand prize winner at the 4’33” Competition on Nov. 16. The competition gives UGA students a chance to share their creative inquiry with the broader university community. Karcher was one of 10 students to present their research this year, and his presentation about sonic spatialization in music composition included a live demonstration with a harmonica.
