MFA candidate Ally Christmas was recently featured on PHOTO–EMPHASIS, an online platform co-run by fellow MFA candidate, Alec Kaus. Christmas was the first video artist to be featured on PHOTO-EMPHASIS, a site whose mission is to provide a resource that aids in promoting photographic art, education, and community, for those committed to and newly joining the medium. For the feature, she shared works from her thesis project, CAN YOU SEE ME NOW, through which she has investigated the notion of how to be in a world seemingly torn between the online and the offline. Two video pieces from CAN YOU SEE ME NOW, titled Syncing and I’m Watching The Loading Bar, And I Hate The Way The Blue Fills Up The Space Because It Reminds Me Of Drowning, are currently on view through May 20, 2018 at the Georgia Museum of Art as part of the Master of Fine Arts Degree Candidates Exhibition. Syncing will also be on view at the upcoming MFA exhibition, Give Them The Slip, in New York curated by Wendy Vogel at bitforms gallery next month. Christmas will join the Art and Art History Department at Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa) this fall as a Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow, teaching courses in Video and New Media.
