Virtual Artist Talk: August 19, 6 PM
MFA alumni Brian Hitselberger works collaboratively with artist Julie Wills.

For this exhibition, artists Maryland-based Julie Wills and Georgia/Indiana-based Brian Hitselberger will work independently in their respective studios, all the while maintaining an active dialogue through correspondence and video conferencing. The shared goal of both artists is to create new work that, when exhibited together, will exist in dialogue with one another while remaining independent: to create a conversation in which each position is honored.

"This show has been in the works for quite some time after a long covid delay. Over the past few years, Julie and I have been corresponding regularly over email, FaceTime and zoom bouncing ideas off one another to keep our mutual momentum going. . It is hard to believe, but we started doing this when such a thing as video call felt novel!

The show’s title is lifted from a book of short stories by Alice Munro, in which much of the “drama” of writing comes from unspoken, internal realizations of the characters- realizations which are often “felt” more so than explicitly stated. (Or read, for that matter). What is said vs. what is unsaid, how things are and how they feel have been big themes for Julie and I as we’ve developed our work in our respective studios in Maryland and Indiana" - Brian Hitselberger

These types of conversations - so critical to larger public life – can only begin between with each other and within ourselves. Through their shared interests in intimacy, longing and the value of tenderness, Wills and Hitselberger intend to speak quietly and with a reverence for the art of dialogue - one viewer at a time.
