His research in 2023-24 will be focused on exploring the use — the reuse — of found cardboard, matching its usefulness and flexibility as a building material with an effort to highlight its temporality and how within our culture it often still remains, in practice, a single-use product. Ben hopes to repurpose over 1000 cardboard items during the academic year, experimenting with strength and plasticity, and building furniture, kinetic objects, and a cardboard dome over 27 feet in height (hopefully with a cast found-aluminum oculus!). Biography Ben was born in Canada and raised on the Canadian prairies, growing up at the juncture between prairie and mountain, agriculture and oil. Having married his prom date in the final days of 1999 — just in case of the end of the world -- Ben and Kari spent the next twenty or so years on an amazing adventure, seeing the world from the places they lived and studied and worked in the US, Europe, Asia, and Canada, raising their family, and pursuing the call of life together. In 2022, when his wife was offered a new Head Coaching role in the US, Ben left his own career and followed, finding his way to the Classics dept. at UGA, where he is studying Latin for the sake of standing closer alongside the story of fifth century monk, John Cassian, and his beautiful writings on quiet, moderation, and the real goal of life.
