Transfer Students

  • Transfer Students

The Lamar Dodd School of Art welcomes transfer students. Faculty and staff work diligently to ensure a smooth transition for each new incoming art major while facilitating acceptance of as many Art Foundations courses as possible. Interested students must be accepted by the University of Georgia. Apply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as an 'Intended Art' or 'Intended Art History' major.

Admissions

In order to be accepted to the Lamar Dodd School of Art, transfer students must apply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as an Intended Art major. Students must be accepted by the University of Georgia and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, of which the Lamar Dodd School of Art is a part.

The Lamar Dodd School of Art reserves the right to determine equivalent credit for any foundation courses being transferred via review of the portfolio and other appropriate materials.

For more information on the Transfer process, application, and transfer equivalency, please contact Undergraduate Admissions.

Placement in Studio Art Core Foundations

Once accepted, you should immediately know where in the Studio Core Foundation program you may be placed. You may reference the Studio Foundation Transfer Credit page for information on the policy of UGA to accept studio credit from your native institution. If you do not find your institution referenced on this page, you should contact ldadvise@uga.edu for information on getting approval for transfer credit. It is important to take care of as much of this is possible before your orientation date. If you have not taken any studio courses at your native school, you will begin the Studio Core program at UGA during your first semester.

BFA Program Length

"HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO GRADUATE IF I TRANSFER TO A BFA PROGRAM AT UGA?"

The BFA major requirements are made up of 60 hours worth of studio and art history courses. In many departments and at other universities, students finish all (or most of) their core requirements within the first 2 years they are in college and then take 2 years of major classes and electives. As art majors at UGA, students start taking major courses their first semester in school. The course of study is sequential and prerequisites must be met. The reality of all BFA Studio programs is that they take approximately 3–4 years to complete no matter how many core requirements you have completed.

If you are a transfer student from another institution or a student from another department, please be aware that the nature of the studio art program will most likely postpone your graduation. If you are planning on transferring to UGA and you are doing research ahead of time, please see Studio Core Transfer Credits to see if your institution has introductory studio courses that are equivalent to our own. If so, you should plan to take all 3 courses that we require in the foundation year (Drawing I, Color/Composition, and 3D Design). You should not necessarily try to complete all your core requirements in advance of transferring, as doing so will not necessarily get you through the studio coursework any faster and, in fact, may make it difficult to maintain full-time status (12 hours per semester) as students are limited to taking three (3) studio courses per semester.

Students in the BFA programs will take one year of studio foundation classes and approximately 6 semesters of major requirements in their area of emphasis. These BFA programs generally cannot be accelerated and it should not be assumed that you can take summer classes to graduate early. Please e-mail ldadvise@uga.edu to discuss the particulars of transferring to UGA. We can help you make the most of your credits at your home school and at UGA!
