Before his tenure at Lamar Dodd School of Art, Dr. Nix taught and supervised art at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in Georgia’s public schools from 1955 to 1968, where he later joined the faculty at Dodd.

He was a multi-talented artist, excelling in photography, painting, sculpture, jewelry, and wood working. He loved mentoring students and his love initiated three endowments for the school, honoring experiential learning and leadership in Art Education, as well as a general support fund for Photography. Dr. Nix was instrumental in creating a photography collection at the School of Art so that students could have hands-on familiarity with examples of historic photographic processes, materials, and equipment. He curated exhibitions, helped with the preparation of numerous books, and served the artistic community on a local, regional, and national level. He was passionate about teaching and in 1979 he was awarded the Beaver Award winner for Excellence in Teaching. He held the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship from 1982-1984, and was The Josiah Meigs Award Winner for Excellence in Teaching in 1989.

He joined the faculty of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at The University of Georgia, where he taught from 1968-2001. He was chairman of the Art Education area from 1974-1996, and taught classes in Art Education and Photography until 2001.

Dr. Nix will be remembered and missed for his dedication and hard work. He instilled the love of art, demonstrating and fostering empathy and leadership in students and faculty.
