“Color the World Bright” Project featured in Garden & Gun

Professor Joe Norman and students from the Lamar Dodd School of Art were recently featured in Garden & Gun Magazine for leading a project called “Color the World Bright”. In this program, Norman and students create and restore public murals of a bygone time. Phoebe Gloeckner is a graphic novelist. Her book, The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2002), was praised as “one of the most brutally honest, shocking, tender, beautiful portrayals of growing up female in America.” Cartoonist R. Crumb called her story, “Minnie’s Third Love” (published in A Child’s Life and Other Stories) one of the “comic book masterpieces of all time.” Her books have been published in multiple languages and her artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe. Printmaking and Book Arts well represented at Penland Winter Residency Program

Printmaking and Book Arts Area faculty and graduate students participated in the Penland Winter Residency Program. Professors Melissa Harshman and Eileen Wallace along with graduate student Alex McClay spent the first week of January at Penland School of Crafts working on research in both printmaking and book arts. Professor Asen Kirin Featured in Telly Award Winning Documnentary

Asen Kirin, Professor of Art History, was recently featured in an award-winning documentary by CloudCatcher Productions entitled, Georgia Museum of Art Exhibition: “Gifts and Prayers: The Romanovs and Their Subjects”. The documentary was awarded a Silver Medal in the National Telly Awards. Kirin was featured in the film for his work with the exhibition Gifts and Prayers: The Romanovs and Their Subjects. Art History Doctoral Student Receives Grants to Conduct Research in Europe

Megan Neely, Art History PhD candidate, was recently awarded both the Lamar Dodd School of Art Andrew Ladis European Travel Award and the University of Georgia’s Graduate School Summer Research Travel Grant. The funds allowed Neely to travel in the summer of 2018 to study works by the Venetian artist Titian in the Czech Republic, Austria, and the United Kingdom. In particular, these funds allowed Neely to visit Kroměříž, where Titian’s Flaying of Marsyas, the focus of her dissertation, is held in the collection of the Olomouc Archbishopric. Art History Doctoral Student Receives Grants to Conduct Research in Italy

PhD student Lindsay Doty’s doctoral research examines the patronage and production of rare Italian Renaissance images that portray the Virgin Mary as an extremely aged mother; in particular, those made by Andrea Mantegna and his circle while he served as court artist to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Within this framework, she is also exploring the artist-patron relationship between Mantegna and Barbara of Brandenburg, who was a formidable, yet understudied matron of the Gonzaga dynasty, and arguably the perfect patron of these unusual Marian images. Alumna Receives Highest Honor from Accrediting Body

Alumna of the Lamar Dodd School of Art and University of South Carolina Aiken Chancellor, Dr. Sandra Jordan, was awarded the highest honor from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the James T. Rogers Distinguished Leadership Award. The honor, named for the former executive director who served the Commission on Colleges for more than two decades, “is the highest public recognition given by the commission and is reserved for extraordinarily distinctive and effective leadership,” according to the SACSCOC website. Massey Klein is pleased to present The End & The Beginning, a two-person exhibition exploring themes of life and death through works on paper by Alice Gibney and UGA Alum, Sarah Irvin.
