INCANDESCENCE may bring glowy, electric imagery to mind, but it also conjures ideas of passion, full of emotion. This encapsulates the graduating students’ work as they conclude their undergraduate experience at the University of Georgia. Hope, uncertainty, joy—these sentiments embody the glowing future undergraduates strive towards—are presented visually within this exhibition.
“The initial goal for the exhibition poster was to fully embody the variety of work that the group had made,” said Younis Abdulkadir, who led in the design. Since the students have such a large body of completely distinct works to share, concepts for the poster shifted toward representing the idea of incandescence.
Instructor Jaime Bull, who is teaching capstone exhibition this semester, said “The artists in this group are interested in many different things: identity, working as queer artists in the south, pop culture, nostalgia, depicting anxieties and the natural world.” Bull added, “They are using video technology, virtual reality, printmaking and painting to express many perspectives but have come together and worked as a team to organize, promote, and create this impressive group exhibition. This exhibition is an exciting opportunity to see these final projects before this talented group takes the next step from the university out into the world.”
The works in this show were created by artists with varying practices. Dylan and Cole Williamson are working together to create a video with mysterious imagery that can be enjoyed on a vintage television set. Francie Carson is making work that focuses on their experiences of growing up as a queer person in the suburban South by using a variety of media, such as quilting, weaving, printmaking, drawing, and welding. We invite you to experience the exhibition to enjoy more artworks by emerging artists.
