The Lamar Dodd School of Art has a variety of federal work study positions open for the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to apply to a range of roles below!

Checkout for Audiovisual Equipment (CAVE) Assistant

The Lupin Foundation Technology and Research Kiosk- CAVE is an audio/visual equipment checkout center at the Lamar Dodd School of Art’s main building. The CAVE serves the technology needs of School of Art students, faculty, and staff. CAVE Associates work under the guidance of the Art Studio Technician and will be responsible for maintaining and organizing the equipment check-out center, and assisting students, faculty, and staff with any technical questions they may have. This position is responsible for participation in the overall workflow/functionality of the CAVE.

Duties & Experience: Manage front desk and online checkout. Ensure equipment is prepared for student checkouts and reservations. Ability and interest in learning new technology and instructing students on the proper use of equipment. CAVE associates will maintain and organize the equipment checkout center, catalog new equipment as needed, follow procedures for damaged equipment, and follow all policies and procedures of the CAVE.

Service or retail industry experience preferred. Experience with Adobe Premiere and Video Production preferred. Working knowledge of audio and visual technology and equipment preferred.

Jewelry & Metals Assistant

Duties include shop and equipment maintenance, cleaning and monitoring in the jewelry and metal-smithing lab. Some responsibilities with visiting artists, demonstrations, and workshops may be required. Responsibilities also include light office work, organizing, basic carpentry and construction and help with installation of student exhibitions.

Skills: Experience in art preferred

Location: Lamar Dodd School of Art, Thomas Street Art Annex

Schedule: Flexible, 6-10 hours per week.

Tool Room Assistant

The Tool Room is a hand and machine tool check out center at Lamar Dodd School of Art, at the Thomas Street Complex. The Tool Room serves the tool needs of the School of Art students, faculty, and staff. Tool Room Monitors work under the guidance of the Art Studio Technician and will be responsible for maintaining and organizing the equipment check out center, and assisting students, faculty, and staff with any technical questions they may have. This position is responsible for participating in the overall workflow/functionality of the Tool Room.

Duties/Experience: Checkout and check in small hand tools for students and faculty. Ensure tools are returned in working order. Ability and interest in learning about tools and instructing students on the proper use of equipment. Responsible for regular safety checks in the shops, enforcing safety policies and cleaning areas when needed. Communicate with the Tech Team when supplies are low and tools need repaired. Tool Room Monitors will help maintain and organize the tools and tool room, follow procedures for damaged tools, and follow all safety policies and procedures of the Thomas Street Art Complex.

Service or retail industry experience preferred. Working knowledge of wood working and metal working tools preferred.

Wood Shop Assistant

Looking for a hands-on responsible, and personable individual interested in monitoring a wood shop where School of Art faculty and students create with wood, using hand tools and heavy machinery. The desired candidate is willing to engage with shop users, tools and materials and will enforce proper safety procedures during their hours worked.

Duties include:

  • Monitor wood shop activity
  • Dial 911 in an emergency
  • Interface with shop users including School of Art faculty and students
  • Learn to demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment
  • Learn to recognize unsafe use of tools and equipment
  • Enforce safety and shop policies
  • Tag and Lock-out malfunctioning equipment
  • Provide aid and assistance to wood shop users
  • Restock supplies and help manage inventory
  • Maintain a clean and orderly shop
  • Work on special projects
  • Report to Wood Shop manager
