Flora Anthony to Teach Ancient Egyptian Art in Spring 2020

The Lamar Dodd School of Art will welcome Professor Flora Anthony as a Visiting Assistant Professor to teach two undergraduate courses on ancient Egyptian art and architecture in Spring 2020. Anthony comes to UGA from her regular position as a Part-Time Assistant Professor of Art History from the School of Art and Design at Kennesaw State University.

In Spring 2020, Prof. Anthony will teach:

ARHI 3001 From Hatshepsut to Cleopatra: Ancient Egypt on the World Stage 1500-30 BC
A lecture course focused on ancient Egyptian art and architecture from the prosperous New Kingdom during a period of international cultural exchange with the Near East, Aegean Mediterranean, and Nubia to the end of an independent pharaonic state with the death of Cleopatra in 30 B.C.

ARHI 4900 Ancient Egyptian Art: Materials and their Symbolism
Using the lens of the diverse artistic materials that ancient Egyptians employed to create the objects that both defined and immortalized their culture, this course uses artistic objects to examine the underlying social, political, economic and religious systems these objects functioned within. This course critically examines the intersections of materials, symbolism, and functions of artworks in a wide range of media to shed light on the underlying meanings of the ancient Egyptian tombs, temples, and artifacts.

Dr. Flora Anthony is an art historian specializing in ancient Egypt art and architecture, with graduate degrees from Emory University (Ph.D.) and the University of Memphis (M.A.). Her research interests include Ancient Egyptian materials (especially faience), ancient concepts of magic, historic and contemporary forgeries, and ancient international relations and visual expressions of identity. Her book Foreigners in Ancient Egypt, Theban Tomb Paintings from the Early Eighteenth Dynasty was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2016. Outside of teaching in the classroom, Dr. Anthony lectures for The Archaeological Institute of America and is a contributor on the Science Channel show Egypt: The Unexplained Files.

The Dodd Galleries at the University of Georgia are pleased to announce The Body Politic, our 2025 Margie E. West Prize recipient exhibition in which Lamar Dodd School of Art alumna, Kristine Potter (American, b. 1977)—BFA Photography and BA Art History (‘01)—presents a survey of selected work from three series: The Gray Line (2005-2010), Manifest (2012-2017), and Dark Waters (2015-2023).

The UGA Community Art School features courses for adults seeking to learn new skills, hone techniques, and expand their artistic expression. Taught by UGA faculty, the classes maximize individual instruction and experiential learning in the legendary studios of the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Ally Smith, 2025 Dodd commencement speaker and recipient of Art Director’s Award for Outstanding undergraduate student, is a fourth-year graphic design student with a minor in studio art, design and media at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. Smith has worked closely with alumna Kelly Layton (BFA graphic design, '90) and credits her own interests in participating in the newly introduced Layton Design
