Marni Shindelman's work as part of Larson Shindelman and Meghann Riepenhoff (BFA 2003) are currently featured in the Denver Art Museum's recent exhibition New Territory: Landscape Photography Today at the Denver Art Museum.  

New Territory: Landscape Photography Today is a survey of contemporary landscape photography from around the world. The exhibition of more than 100 photographs will explore how artists stretch the boundaries of traditional landscape photography to reflect the environmental attitudes, perceptions, and values of our time.

The works revive historic photographic processes as well as use innovative techniques and unconventional equipment and chemistry to depict landscapes in surprising ways. Taken individually and as a whole, the photographs will show how about 40 artists have manipulated materials and processes for expressive purposes, blurring the distinction between "observed" and "constructed" imagery. The exhibition challenges us to see photography differently, and contemplate our complex relationship with the landscape.

New Territory: Landscape Photography Today is on view through September 16.

Nate Larson and Shindelman, Dodd Associate Professor and Area Chair for Photography, collaboratively investigate the data tracks we amass through networked communication. Their work ties the invisible to actual sites, anchoring the ephemeral in photographs and immersive video installations. Their most well-known project, Geolocation, traces Twitter posts to the point of origin and makes a photograph to mark the location in the real world, probing the expectations of privacy surrounding social networks.

The first phase of Geolocation (2009 - 2016) took them across the US, from New York to Los Angeles, as well as to Canada and England. Flash Powder Projects published a monograph of this work in January 2016. The second phase, Gratitude (2016 - 2017), took them to Russia, where they photographed tweets with the hashtag #ThanksPutinForThis and are currently photographing the sister hashtag #ThanksObama in the US. They are currently shaping this work into their second book.

Riepenhoff's (BFA 2003) work has been exhibited and is held in the collections at the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Worcester Art Museum. Additional collections include the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which holds Riepenhoff’s largest work to date, a 12 x18 ft. cyanotype. Additional exhibitions include Yossi Milo Gallery, Jackson Fine Art, Galerie du Monde, Euqinom Projects, the Aperture Foundation, and San Francisco Camerawork. She is part of an upcoming exhibition at the New York Public Library, and will have solo exhibitions in Atlanta and San Francisco in 2018.
