Join the friends and former students of Ron Meyers, emeritus faculty member of the Lamar Dodd School of Art, in a special opportunity to recognize his teaching and mentoring legacy at the University of Georgia.
This student support fund will both honor Ron and recognize UGA ceramic graduate students and their achievements. With $10,000 already pledged, please help to raise the additional $15,000 needed to endow the Ron Meyers Graduate Award in Ceramics. Once endowed, the department will give out the award every year, and invite Ron and Hester back to campus for the award ceremony and dinner to meet their recipient(s).
A letter from George Metropoulos McCauley
I am so pleased to have been asked to help participate in the Ron Meyers Student Support Fund in Ceramics, honoring my friend of 52 years. As one of Ron’s first students, in 1967-70, and later as his grad student, 1976-78, I have had the benefit of close relationships with him, his amazing wife Hester and the entire family. His easy going manner and teaching style along with a compelling work ethic has inspired not only me, but countless clay people (it’s too difficult of a task to put your arms around the number of artists that he has inspired).
At a wonderful 85 years young he continues to work every day, producing pots that cause me to ask him, “Damn Rono, how is it possible that your work continues to grow like this?” Each time I return to Georgia I see new work that is inspiring. We can only hope that we will be the same in our later years.
For the past year and half, Walter Shroyer, Steve Driver, Anthony Schaller and I have been raising funds for the Ron Meyers Student Support Fund in Ceramics. We have raised almost $15,000 towards our goal of $25,000 (the minimum amount needed to start an endowment).
We believe that we can exceed that goal and make it possible for many graduate ceramic students to benefit from Ron’s award. I would like to ask for all y’all to pass this information on to your friends, contacts, share it on internet networks and perhaps – ah the big ask, make a contribution yourselves.
We have several ways that you can contribute.
- Making a gift directly to Ron’s fund. Your gift will be tax deductible.
- Purchasing a piece of art from the Schaller Gallery, which is a collaborative effort of artists who want to support Ron and Hester. It’s not tax deductible; however, you will be the proud owner of beautiful work and the proceeds will benefit Ron’s fund.
I want to thank, Walter Shroyer, Kate Arnold, The Schaller Gallery, and many others who have worked on this loving and most important project. Ron is overwhelmed at this attention and appreciative for the dedicated efforts.
I want to thank each of y’all who have contributed, and thank y’all in advance for passing on this information about The Ron Meyers Student Scholarship Fund. I am always willing to talk to anyone about this fundraising effort and I will throw in some Ron stories from these 52 years of wildness. For more questions about the endowment, please contact Kate Arnold (arnoldk@uga.edu).
Sincerely,
George Metropoulos McCauley, ’78
