BFA Degree & Area of Emphasis Requirements

The BFA degree​ in fine arts in the Lamar Dodd School of Art requires focus in an area of emphasis (such as Ceramics, Sculpture, Graphic Design or Fabric Design, for example.) Area-specific requirements within the BFA are listed below. Find sample four-year plans listed below with each corresponding area of emphasis.

The BFA degree at the University of Georgia requires 60 hours of major coursework (beyond Area VI requirements). A minimum grade of C (not C-) is required in all major courses.

BFA students at the Lamar Dodd School of Art must complete foundations courses in our studio art core curriculum for undergraduates along with area-specific requirements (see details below). The lower-level and intermediate studio art core curriculum is reflected in the Area VI requirements of the BFA degree in the UGA General Education Core Curriculum.

Studio Art Core

The Studio Art Core curriculum exposes students to a variety of experiences ranging from rigorous classroom critiques and discussion, to seminars, workshops, visiting artist lectures, and exhibitions. Studio Art Core coursework includes two survey courses in art history, three introductory-level studio courses, an intermediate course concerned with conceptual development and ideation, and two upper-level courses focused on thematic inquiry and professional practice.

If any of the courses in Area VI have been used to satisfy Areas II-V of the Core Curriculum, General Electives may be taken here. (Refer to College-wide requirements when selecting General Electives)

Franklin College Core Requirements

Additionally, the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences requires core courses for its majors.
BFA students need only the additional multicultural course requirement.
