Funding & Research Support
Full-time students in the Art History MA, Studio MFA, and Art Education and Art History PhD programs are fully funded through departmental assistantships and tuition waivers. Assistantships are renewed on an annual basis. Funding is also available from various sources to offset the cost of materials and travel related to graduate research.
Graduate Assistantships
Applicants to all Dodd Graduate programs will be automatically considered for departmental assistantships, which typically involve grading, teaching, working in the Art library, or assisting with the operations of the Dodd galleries. No separate application is required.
The University of Georgia offers Graduate School Assistantships to students entering programs in Art, Music, and Theatre and Film Studies following a highly qualified student’s nomination by their home department. These competitive, merit-based awards support collaborative research between the arts and other disciplines. Recipients of these assistantships work in a cohort of graduate students with the UGA Arts Collaborative, an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at UGA.
To be considered for a Graduate School Assistantship, applicants must provide a one-page statement to their home department’s Graduate Coordinator. The statement should describe the applicant’s current research interests and any previous training and experience in interdisciplinary or collaborative programs and environments. Nominees will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee.
The Graduate School offers several fellowships and scholarships, which are described in detail on their website. Applicants must be nominated by their home department and routed through the Dodd Graduate Office.
The Office of Vice President for Student Affairs (OVPSA) coordinates the selection process for graduate assistantships in Student Affairs and in offices of our campus partners (for 2019, Career Services and the Office of Service Learning will be selecting graduate students through this process as well). All students enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program offered at the University of Georgia are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships through this process.

Graduate Research and Travel Support
Travel Grants are available from the Graduate School to offset the cost of participating in conferences and exhibitions in the continental United States and abroad.
The Willson Center Graduate Research Award provides support toward research related expenses for arts and humanities projects that are essential components of a graduate degree program. Application is open to any humanities and arts graduate student registered for an advanced degree.
The Art History area reviews applications from graduate students who wish to travel for the purpose of conducting or presenting research. A call for applications is issued twice annually by the Art History Area Chair.
The Dodd Graduate Office reviews requests for research-related funding on a rolling basis. The graduate office will also review proposals to offset cost incurred at summer residencies. Please contact Lindsey Reynolds, Associate Director of Research and Graduate Studies with any questions.
