Research Detail
There is meaning in negative space. Just as mathematicians use voids to understand the boundaries of complex shapes, I am interested in what’s left behind– in the unsaid. Since I was a child, I’ve collected things: from bits of paper, to broken shells, to family stories and old photographs. Each talisman was left over from a specific place, feeling or experience. Sherry Turkle says, “We think with the objects we love; we love the objects we think with.” My worldview was, and continues to be, shaped by the objects many deemed mundane. Now, through techniques such as printmaking, papermaking, and fiber arts, I decode systems of meaning and assemble patterns from those objects. My work seeks to create surprises from an accumulation of mundanity. And in that accumulation, I evoke patterns that may say something about a universal truth or experience.
