Research Detail

My work continues oil painting’s tradition of depicting people, places, and things observed from everyday life. I’m often drawn to subjects that are overlooked or deemed “unimportant” by those with money and power; dealing with otherness or a lack of belonging. I also explore the relationship and influences between figures and the objects and environments that surround them.

I use painting’s constructed, fictional nature to explore the reality of being alive, especially life in America. My work is based on both historical narrative paintings and contemporary social realism. Painting is a medium wrapped up in illusion. I attempt to both break the illusion and use it to get at deeper truths. I work to incorporate the materiality of paint; its flatness, texture, color and mark making in order to explore the beauty of the subjects and the painting’s surface.
