In 2019, I received a B.F.A. from Michigan State University, in studio art with a focus in Oil Painting and Photography. Choosing this major involved a mental volley between life as a full time visual artist or a path in art education. However, for many reasons, the biggest one being, I didn’t think I would be “good” at it, I chose to focus strictly on studio art. After taking a brief break away from school, I went on to attend Georgia State University. In 2023, I graduated with a M.F.A. in photography.
While attending Georgia State, I taught classes as a part of my assistantship. It was here that a shift happened and class after class I found myself going through the motions of teaching until they became my own. Before long the areas I felt insecure in became places of great confidence. This showed me that despite feeling not “good” enough I could still move. And I was moving. Recognizing this helped me to adapt similar movements into the classroom, following a method of leading inside then expanding out.
Influenced by this practice, I am currently deeply interested in understanding the concept of “I am. Because You are.” And how we can lead inward in the classroom, to create real change around us.
