Alex Hathaway is a PhD student specializing in the art and architecture of the ancient Mediterranean. His MA thesis explored the original historical and cultural functions of the ‘classical Greek’ style and visual languages in Athenian funerary loutrophoroi, which were integral to later notions of Greek art in the Greco-Roman period. Hathaway’s dissertation project focuses on a synthetic view of the different types of art displayed in Roman villa environments and the concepts of authenticity and cultural memory in the display of reused Greek ‘original’ sculptures and their copies.
