Using her own hair as a foundational image, Athens-based artist Kathryn Réfi weaves organic and irregular material into the familiar pattern of a manufactured chain link fence, creating a tension between softness and rigidity. Réfi creates unsteady ground for the viewer as she plays with perceptions of three dimensionality and flatness. Her body is transformed into a barrier as she contemplates ways in which we hold ourselves back, both mentally and physically. While the artist becomes the obstacle, she also points to a way out. The walls we put up for protection and self preservation are ultimately absurd in their self-destruction.
