Dodd MFA candidate, Mickey Boyd, and frequent collaborator, Albuquerque-based artist, Max Yardbird present Waste Creation, a collaborative art installation many years in the making. Most of the initial ideas can be traced to late nights spent drawing together in shabby apartments, watching 1990’s VHS’s of bad action movies in Denver, Colorado, where they both originate. The persistent grind of low paid construction labor and the lingering effects of the great recession, created in both artists a satirical sense of humor to cope with the continuing dread of high rent, high stress, and desperate people that tend to exist in big, expensive cities. Waste Creation explores how exponential growth equals exponential waste. This waste is not only physical, but exists beyond in the verbal, political, capitalist, and digital realms. Relentless information, true and untrue, piles up on the services we use to disseminate information just as waste products pile up endlessly in our landfills, atmosphere, and oceans. The collection of images and sculptures mock this set of circumstances, in an attempt to understand the many cultural facets that lead us into a never ending cycle of waste creation.
Mickey Boyd was born in the Bay Area of California, but moved to the Front Range of Colorado in the early part of his life. He was born the youngest in a blended family of four boys. Living on a ranch in the plains of central Colorado provided an essential understanding and love of the vast amount of space that exists in the American West. Experiences working in his father’s shop and appreciating the big sky of his family’s home provided a basis for the work that he makes today. He is currently based out of Athens Georgia, and is a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Georgia.
Max Yardbird is an outsider artist born and raised in Denver, Colorado and newly working out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their work includes but is not limited to portraits, replicas, landscapes, western style illustration, screen prints and murals in mediums oil paint, acrylic, gouache, wood and clay. Their recent work has focused on screen printing and fundraising for mutual aid groups in New Mexico and Colorado.
