A collection of works from the 1st year MFA students at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, Social Dissonance examines, through figurative and abstract visual representations, life in our current moment. Dissonance and disjunction have come to the fore of many people’s lives since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic as habits, rituals, and the everyday are redefined. The artworks presented in this exhibition evoke the experience of dissonance, both as a positive and negative affect of our new daily lives. At times, bodies or incoherent forms appear as a reminder of isolation or social distancing. The artworks speak to our present moment, but the artists often situate the present on timelines that stretch into the past, anticipate the future, or reach into an imagined world. The gallery space serves to reconnect people to the physical experience of viewing artworks while prompting consideration of this distinct moment.
The exhibition is curated by first year MA students in Art History, Francesca Felicella and Audrey Martinich.
