The Dodd Galleries present Hope This Finds You Well, curated by Dodd MFA candidate Paul Knopf, a group exhibition that explores communication across borders, technologies, and time. Through the lens of intercontinental exchange and poetics of movement, this exhibition delves into the ways we share messages, both personal and universal, in a world where signals—be they from Voyager probes or a message in a bottle—cross distances and barriers, often also failing to reach their intended recipients or their content getting muddied along the way. The exhibition examines the fluidity of information transmission, referencing historical forms such as Morse code and carrier pigeons, while also considering modern concepts like mailart and other forms of planetary signaling.
As the artists featured in the exhibition are a group of close friends, their focus on transitory and experimental communication models reflects their current state of being dispersed across the globe—from Germany via Iceland to the US. Thus, they engage with themes of fragmentation, connection, and the performative act of sending and receiving. Their work is a response to the shifting tectonics of cultural exchange and a reflection of the way messages—whether visual, auditory, or encoded—circulate through space and time. The artists invite us to consider the message itself, but also the method of transmission as a form of communication in its own right.
The artworks will be made specifically for this exhibition and will range from a set of instructions to post-digital messages in a bottle to them being made by traveling between the artists and eventually to Athens. Large-scale projections will depict themes of interconnectedness, embodying both the beauty and futility of seeking connection across vast distances. This show speaks to the universal longing for connection in an era where messages are at once both ubiquitous and elusive, offering both the UGA community and global-local audiences an opportunity to reflect on how we communicate across time, space, and technology.
