Born in 1985 in Carolina, Puerto Rico and currently based in Oakland, California, Sofía Córdova makes work that considers sci-fi as alternative history, dance music's liberatory potential, the internet, colonial contamination, mystical objects, and extinction and mutation as evolution, within the matrix of class, gender, race, late capitalism and its technologies. She works in performance, video, sound, installation, photography, and sometimes taxidermy. She is one half of the music duo and experimental sound outfit XUXA SANTAMARIA. In addition to discrete projects, they collectively score all of her video work. She has exhibited and performed at venues such as SFMOMA, the Wattis Institute, and the Contemporary Jewish Museum. She has participated in residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts, Mills College Museum (CA), the ASU Museum (AZ) and Eyebeam (NY) . She is a recipient of a Creative Work Fund and her work is part of Pier 24’s and The Whitney Museum’s permanent collection.
 
Artist Statement:
Sofía Córdova will draw a thread through the science-fictional universe(s) she’s created in video, performance, music, sculpture, and installation. Interested in how speculative models interact with and shape contemporary histories and the lives of their protagonists. Córdova will discuss in process works that expand the reach of her practice beyond sci-fi to include recent works and their linkages to revolutions (big and small), as well as works created under the pressurized conditions presented by the pandemic. 
 

The Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series has brought over 80 distinguished guests to the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia since 2002. Visiting Artists and Scholars spend three days on campus interacting with students and faculty, the culmination of which is a public lecture on the subject of the artist’s or scholar’s work.
