Within these narratives, her own experiences are used as a bridge between the personal and universal. She contemplates social interactions specifically seeking and capturing moments of tenderness and tenuousness. This research can range from intensely personal to socio-political, and anywhere in between. She thinks a lot about the things that drive and inform our relationships to each other, and in doing so, asks difficult questions and seeks answers from other people. By exploring a socially engaged practice, she creates an interactive and participatory experience for the viewer and uses book, print, and installation formats as platforms to speak up and out. Biography Alex McClay was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but she has lived in Cincinnati, Ohio for most of her life. She received her BFA with an emphasis in Photography and Sculpture from the University of Cincinnati in 2014. In 2016, she was lucky enough to become a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts. There, she focused primarily on Book Arts, Papermaking, and Printmaking.
