From the University Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows Program Interview Series:
The fourth feature in our University Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows program series is Moon Jung Jang from the UGA Department of Visual Communication Design in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. In the interview below, Professor Jang shares about how utilizing Special Collections archival materials impacted her and her students.
Q&A with Professor Jang
1. What has been your favorite special collections item or group of items to use in teaching?
My students and I have read some issues of The Student Voice published by SNCC, Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee.
2. Why were these issues your favorite items?
A design course, Design Center, is designed to explore graphic design problems and the impact of visual communication design. Project topics range from social design & public outreach to information graphics. The Student Voice is an invaluable material to reflect the collection of historical messages onto the present public through design practices.
3. How do students respond to, or what do they take from the experience of working closely with special collections materials?
After reading some issues of The Student Voice, students in this class have used the material as an inspiration to create a series of visual forms or to commemorate information and legacy derived from The Student Voice. Also, they have designed various forms: campaigns, publications, online platforms, and experiential designs.
The University Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows work with archivists and librarians to redesign existing courses or create new ones that focus on archives-centered learning.
