Laura Lake Smith

Laura Lake Smith is an Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art in the Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. During the PhD program, Smith specialized in Modern and Contemporary Art History and taught classes at both the University of Georgia and Emory University. Her dissertation examined the perplexing serial art of the American artist Richard Tuttle and was generously supported by a Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship in American Art in 2015-2016, a Willson Center Research Grant for the Humanities, a UGA Research Foundation grant, and the Rydquist Travel and Research Fund for Art History. Smith’s research on Tuttle is now the focus of a book project and several articles. Her other research interests include twentieth-century abstraction, time-based media, and the intersection of contemporary art and philosophy. Smith holds a MA in Art History from Vanderbilt University and a BA in Art History and English from the University of Alabama. Prior to the PhD program, she lectured in art history at Belmont University and Lipscomb University and worked at Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, Tennessee. Following her graduation from UGA and before joining the faculty at UAH, Smith taught art history courses and interdisciplinary humanities seminars at Coastal Carolina University.
