The BFA in Art Education degree is ideally suited for students with a serious interest in art and a desire to share that interest with others. The program prepares students to teach in PK-12 educational settings, with an emphasis on school settings but with opportunities to explore museum and community settings as well. Students should be dedicated to helping young people develop their abilities to create and respond to art; exhibit adaptability to a variety of learning situations, student backgrounds, and personalities; demonstrate flexibility and imagination in using a range of art media, equipment, and facilities; and be resourceful in the development of instructional strategies relevant to contemporary students. This program leads to a Level 4 Teaching Certificate.

Individuals with an undergraduate degree in Art (or a closely related major) from the Lamar Dodd School of Art or another four-year institution may request admission to Art Education for the Certification (non-degree) program. This is an entry-level (Level 4) certification that allows program completers to teach at the PK-12 level.

Offered online through the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the University of Georgia’s Master of Art Education (MAEd) explores the intersections of art curriculum, contemporary art, disability studies, culturally responsive practices, and digital technology. As a student in the program, you will investigate contemporary content and methods for art education, conduct inquiries that impact your practice, and experiment with artistic processes. Graduates are encouraged to be reflective, creative, and critical practitioners who challenge the status quo through locally and globally transformative practices.

UGA’s Master of Art Education offers you a flexible program completely online, with the option to attend a one-week, summer, studio-focused residency on campus, during which time you will complete no more than 5% of your total credit hours for the program.

Designed as an advanced course of study in art education, this Educational Specialist (EdS) program is for working art education professionals who already hold a master’s degree in Art Education. This program allows students from a variety of art education contexts to further their art education expertise and offers eligibility for an upgraded T-6 Georgia teaching certification to those working in PK-12 schools.

The Educational Specialist (EdS) in Education (Art Education Emphasis) program is offered jointly by the College of Education and the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

A Doctor of Philosophy in Art degree with an emphasis in Art Education is the highest degree offered by the area of Art Education. The culmination of the degree is the acceptance of a doctoral dissertation that demonstrates that the student is capable of doing independent and original research that contributes to the body of knowledge in the field. Candidates for the degree will demonstrate competence in academic writing, research methodologies and contemporary theories and practices in art education and related disciplines. The specific sequence of courses for each candidate will depend on their area of interest and previous coursework. The PhD offers eligibility for an upgraded T-7 Georgia teaching certification for those working in PK-12 schools.
