Where Do We Go From Here is a photographic series documenting the decline of textile and mill towns in upstate South Carolina—places where I and my parents grew up. The mills that once sustained Anderson, Belton, Laurens, and Ware Shoals provided stability, identity, and pride. When they closed, the region shifted toward a service economy that offered neither the same wages nor the same sense of fulfillment. The effects are visible everywhere: in abandoned buildings, neglected landmarks, and communities grappling with loss.
My work seeks to preserve these places before they disappear. Through photography, I explore the tension between memory and reality, past and present. My childhood recollections of these towns often conflict with their current state, raising questions about how nostalgia shapes our understanding of history. By photographing cultural centers and everyday structures, I aim to record both their physical presence and their emotional weight.
I see my project as both documentary and autobiography. It reflects not only my personal history but also broader narratives of deindustrialization and neglect across the South. These photographs are a way of honoring what remains, even as I acknowledge what has been lost.
